As all of you know I go by the nick "Schliemann"....this is due to my
love of an f5 attack in defence. The Schliemann defence to the Ruy
Lopez runs 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5. Although this is considered
inferior...it is a tough cookie to handle...same as the Latvian gambit
(brave Tony) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5.
And of course my beloved PCG and the not so well known Balogh
defense.
But one of my other faves is the Cordel defense to the Lopez...this
one is even riskier then the others....but has so many attacking
possibilities. Here is a killer game between GM Eduard Gufeld and GM
Lubomir Kavalek...1962.
1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.Bb5 Bc5
4.c3 f5!?
The Cordel!!!!!
5.d4 fxe4
6.Ng5..
More appropriate is 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Nxe5
6.......Bb6
7. d5 e3!
Gufeld was hoping for Nce7? 8.Ne6!...trapping the queen..but he
missed the trap!
8.Ne4 Qh4
9.Wf3 Nf6
10.Nxf6+ gxf6
11.dxc6 exf2+
12.Kd1 dxc6
13.Be2...
Now you might have seen 13.Bxc6+ bxc6 14.Qxc6+...winning the
rook...but after Kf7 15.Qxa8 Bg4+...the girl is toast.
13....Be6
14.Qh5+ Qxh5
15.Bxh5+ Qe7
16.b3 Bd5
17.Ba3+ Ke6
18.Bg4+ f5
19.Bh3 Rhg8
20.Nd2 Bxg2
21.Bxg2 Rxg2
22.Rf1
Terrible would be 22.Ke2 f1Q+! 23.Kxf1 Rxd2 getting the piece back.
22....Rd8
23.Ke2 Rxd2!!
This is a killer and the whole start to the plan of preventing
Nc4...removing the dark square bishop..the main piece needed to
hold supremecy over the dark squares.
24.Kxd2 e4
Now we are starting to see Kavalek's plan 25.h4 f4 26.c4 Bd4 27.Rad1
f3 28.Kc2 e3 29.Rxd4 e2 30.Rdd1 Rg1! 31.Rxg1 fxg1Q 32.Rxg1 f2
and promotion is inevitable.
25.Bf8 f4
26.b4! Rg5!
27.Bc5?...
Trying to get rid of the overpowering dark square bishop.
27....Rxc5!
28.bxc5 Bxc5
29.Rab1 f3
30.Rb4 Kf5
31.Rd4 Bxd4
32.cxd4 Kf4
0-1
Killer game...white cannot stop e3 then e2and 33.Rxf2 loses to e3+
And the most wild thing of all..if you notice...black still has ALL his
pawns.
Let me know what you think!
Dave
That is a nuts game! The sad thing is when in our game I chose the
Latvian....it has been the closest ever......my piece versus your 3
pawns! But hey not anymore......when I played the Pirc I got destroyed
so I guess the Latvian fits my style a little better...plus it's slightly
easier to play than hypermodern defenses! I'm still surprised you
don't like the kings Gambit because of your freak obsession with
pushing the f-pawn!
