Unfortunately I'm reincarnated as a dutch speaking person and I'm not sure what 'adverse' means.But I think it refers to your opponents center.For instance if white controls the squares e5,d5 he controls the adverse center.At least,I think so.
As I don't recall every game I ever annotated in my previous life,maybe you could post the sentence where the term was used?That should help making it more clear.

Not saying that it's not a common term,but as far as I remember I never read it anywhere.Then again,I don't know all english chess terms.
