    i decided to get out my old chess engines and fire them up. times have changed,written for windows 95,98 they wouldnt load into windows xp ah well they have served their educational purpose.perhaps more modern engines may cast a different veiw point on engine assisted moves. im too old to be worried about it nowadays alright never too old for chess thobeen playing on and off for 40yrs

    With a bit of research you probably can get them to work again.

    What engines are we talking about?

    If you create a shortcut to the programs, then right click on the shortcut, select "Properties" and click on the "Compatibility" tab then there are quite a few things you can try changing there. Also, some older programs will only run if the user has administrator privileges.

    There are a number of free ones. You can get a compiled version of Crafty from the chessbase website.
