How do most people go about analyzing a game they have just played? I want to improve my game, and I hear of people analyzing a game once it is over. How should I go about doing this? What should I be looking for?
If it is a case of looking for mistakes and how to rectify them, then how do I know where I went wrong? Blunders are obvious to find, but what about the less obvious ones?
Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Originally posted by StevieTI don't analyze my games. I spend enough time analyzing to death during the game. Hey, that might be it! Analyze DURING the game.

I do a brief analysis of my lost games. I don't spend alot of time on it...typically I try to just find 1 or 2 things I can learn from the loss (what got me into trouble..what was I not looking out for...moving too fast..missing blunders...not calculating enough).
If I play an opponent that is rated significantly higher than me (which means I lose of course), I will ask them if they have any recomendations. I've found many to be very helpful.
Hope this helps.

I analyse all my clubgames and some of the internet games who I found interesting. Games with obvious game deciding blunders are usually not interesting for further analyse.
I have Fritz and let it running on infenite analyse. This is to detect tactical opportunities and mistakes. If evaluation is not dependand on tactical moves, I ignore the engine as it is of little use. I check up opening using a database and try to find why certain lines are more popular than those played. I look at other moves which look interesting and check if they are better. I try to determine why the game shifts to the advantage to one of the players and look for improvements.
I usually also whrite alot about how I felt about some move and even the circumstances in which the game was played. This all might be somewhat over the top, but I like doing it and I think it helps me improve my game. It is also fun to look at one of your older analyses to see if you have improved your game.
How to Analyze....
1) Look for obvoius blunders...
2) check your tactics - did you miss a "killa" move or sequence? - If you were to play the game again what would you change??
3) Why did you Win/lose or draw? --- Sometimes this is very easy to awnser, but often not....
Obvoiusally getting a computer or good player to look at the game will make all this easier -- If you don't understand why "x" is better then ask, or play the computer from that position ...just make sure you understand "why"
If I were to Analyze why I lost this Game...Game 1907952
I'd Say....3.Ne7 was a mistake...It hindered my development...D5 was Better, ok I may end up with doubled pawns [Bxc6, bxc6] but at least they can be put to use claiming the centre...
8 Na5 was Terrible! - which is why I resigned...
After
Bxf7+ Kxf7 Ng5+ Ke8 Qxg4
I end up a Pawn down, I can't Castle, I will Find it hard to develop my h8 Rook, and He ends up with more room and a nice little Attack......
If however, e7 Knight were on say g6 instead the Bishop Sacrifice would of Failed because of Qxg5...
Analysis doesn't have to be pages of Superfluos information - a paragraph might do....just so long as you learn

The Game was lost - Hence the resignation...
