It is a great threat when it happens. And another problem is that, even when it is not happening, people sometimes think it is. These are two different situations. So nowadays, the second scenario occurs – someone says his opponent is cheating, and then the whole atmosphere changes, people’s relations change. In the majority of big tournaments, we all more or less trust each other. But even so, I think some form of control is necessary. Consequently, I think it was the right decision to ban mobile phones. Now if they ring, you lose at once. And not only that – even if the sound is turned off, one can receive a text with advice. So one should simply not bring mobiles to the game.

I definitely agree. No electronic devices while the game is being played. It is an easy rule to follow and it takes care of a bunch of problems. I'd even say no phones in the building where the event is being held. It should be a cheating free zone.

I would be in favor of a cell phone ban purely for the annoyance factor. Even after warnings by the tournament director, some doofus has his phone go off anyway, and all the rest of us know that we are in the company of an idiot.

Of course, I have my own moments of idiocy, but this is thankfully not one of them.

Keep the phone off when you are in a court of law as well.

Although to be fair if you're at a chess tournament you don't need a ringing mobile phone to know you're going to be in the company of at least one idiot.

The trouble is with a youngster my wife expects to be able to contact me. Phone on vibrate seems a reasonable compromise in most situations at my level.

I hate the things though and agree with the general sentiment.

Same here, and no one else is bothered by a vibrating phone- I just walk outside and check the message. It's the ringing phones that make everyone look up to gape in awe and disgust at the clueless one.

I at least confine my cluelessness to the board, and at least my opponent benefits from it.
