Did he actually play this? Or is it similar to how Philidor's Defense is named for Philidor, who never actually did use it in a game, but analyzed it extensively?

it can't be worse than 1. f3.

or the grob.

Grob isn't actually all that bad....I mean, between grandmasters it's unsound as hell, but between patzers like us the suprise factor is oftentimes enough to entice Black to make mistakes.

What's 'the grob'?

1.g4. It's ugly and it looks ridiculous, and actually Black is in absolutely no trouble if he is prepared. But if you are not prepared, the Grob can blow you right off the board, and quick.

I believe that you'll find that Tony Miles the british GM beat KARPOV with 1.a3 2.b4, if i had my database installed on this machine i'd post the game but i don't so i can't :'(

Not quite. Miles played black in this game: 1. e4 a6 2. d4 b5 - St. George defense.

eeehhhh... I once played the grob. I was playing about a million games against this completely terribly player, had nothing better to do. I mean completely terrible. Like, it was "nothing-better-to-do-right-before-a-tournament" and I think out of about a dozen games, I drew one, and lost one.

The one I lost?

I tried the grob.

Never again 😵

No your wrong actually, i've met him at my chess club, it did happen. I have the game on my database but my home machine has died. I'll see if i can find it online if i have time.
