another quick question

after repeating the same position 3 times you can claim a draw but can you play on for a few moves before claiming the draw or can you only claim it after the 3 respected position? i'm pretty sure you can claim it anytime but i just want to make sure.

You have to claim it either when you're about to make the third repetition of the position, or when the position is already on the board and it's your move.

If you could claim it at any time after that, then you could try all sorts of ridiculous sacrifices, knowing that you were gauranteed at least a draw even if things went horribly wrong. Actually, I believe that's one proposal to limit draws somewhat - change the rules so that if someone offers a draw, that offer is never recinded. The other player can go all-out and try to win at any cost, knowing he can do no worse than a draw.
