I play the English almost every game as white, but I rarely fianchetto queenside. I almost always fianchetto kingside, however. But that's not to say that fianchettoing queenside isn't possible.

As you will discover if you play the English, the English is generally a loose and unscripted opening. There are many themes and patterns in the opening, but not as many "lines," such as the Sicilian.

the reason is that i play 1.b3 2.Bb2(NLA)......and as you know...an "unscripted" opening like that can lead to english and reti and colle positions...

i'm trying to make the most of my 1.b3

A queenside fianchetto is more Reti than English. According to Schiller (Hypermodern Opening Repertoire for White) this is the ideal white formation in the Reti:

Notice that white fianchettoes both bishops.

Thank you sir......I will now look and compare the Reti to my NLA...and get some better lines.

Booyah baby! Booyah!

I love the English because it is a fantastic curve ball! I also like it because it easily transposes into the Queens gambit if black responds as such. I will most always play the English four knights variation.. and much like one of the above Responses it is very lose and exciting to play.

Queenside finachetto? Yuck! Look at the games of top GMs who play the English and it offers too many prospects to adopt such a setup. What if black opts for the hedgehog, then who will attack who?
