And I tought white was getting really beaten, surprise, surprise.

I had to scrub my chess set with disinfectant after playing through this game. Horrible stuff from both sides, but at least the mate at the end was mildly amusing.

Black should have won. You must be self-critical to improve.

I didnt say I played well. I was happy I pulled off the win. Im asking, because I dont know obviously, and am self critical. What could I have done better? Where are my structural errors? Im trying to improve, not brag.
Thanks,
Eric 😉🙂😀😏

I wasn't trying to hurt you - I was stating the obvious in the hope that even my poor brain might remember to do it!

4. exd wins a tempo (Qxd5 Nc3)
6. Ng3 wins a tempo (~Nxf5) N is exposed on c5 (lost it)
8.Bxc6 and pull N back was better.

On 9... black has won position - should have played e6 & Rc8 & Nf6 (or Nge7) & B-out & O=O

White would have had to try c4 and so on but even then ...Qe4 followed by queen exchange and Kd7 & Nge7 would most likely save piece

Study tactics - no loss of a piece is acceptable unless it leads to greater gain - most of chess is material - as I told a friend that plays here: "get developed and take what they give you and you'll win most of your games" - you did get developed but lost too much

One last point. What I find most interesting is the Arabs mate in the middle (off to the side) of the board.
In the game Fischer-Sanchez, 1959 you find a similar mate, dubbed by Tal as a "fighting chariot" Knight and rook supported by a pawn.

The main reason you won was because of your development. Keep note that once the exchanges took place, you were in the middle game, and you had all your pieces developed while black still had his king side pieces undeveloped. Even though your were down a piece, you managed to get that knight active and keep the pressure on. Granted, black could have defended better, it still shows that development and piece activity are just as important as a material advantage

I don't think I've ever disagreed with one statement about this game as
much as I do with that one. For some reason, it seems a bit more than
just material to me. Almost as though their is a vibrant balance which
is quite more important, than the worth of the pieces.

Who's to say the material has worth?
The principles assign the worth.
We don't find material as a factor, unless we violate these principles.

Chess is the flow of our ideas and our attitude into a single stream of
force, and flexible grace. The material is just a content we use to give
the flow continuity.
