Hello! I am playing chess for about one year. Now I seriously want to improve my chess knowledge. Can anyone of you recommend me some chess books to improve my middle and endgame as well as tactics and so on.... Please tell me also your experiences with these books if you have any.
Thanks!

For middlegame instruction, I recommend "Reassess Your Chess" by Jeremy Silman. The book will completely change the way you look at a chess position forever. I am certain it has helped me add at least 200 points to my rating. Also, "The Amatuer's Mind" by the same author. Here Silman reveals common mistakes made by amatuers, and ways to correct their thinking.

Old Classic--"My System" by Aron Nimzowitsch

As Natural Science says above - Jeremy Silman. I'd go so far as to say anything by Silman will help. Silman does a great job of explaining chess positions. His big issue is with "imbalances" in the position, how to spot them, and how to take advantage of them.

I would have to differ a bit with prior posts and say that you need to study tactics as a priority.

Try "Chess Tactics for the tournament player" by Alpurt

You'll get more bang for the buck studying tactics than positional chess at this point in your 'career'.

These books helped me brush up after not playing for a long time:

Keene On Chess - Raymond Keene

Weapons of Chess - Bruce Pandolfini

Winning Chess Tactics - Yasser Seirawan

I think hypermo makes a good point about tactics. I overlooked the fact that you'd only been playing for a year. So yeah, a tactics book or twoo will definitely help. AND practice them. It's been so long since I read mine I can't remember the titles though. I had one by Pandolfini I believe that was excellent and I absolutely wore it down to where it's almost illegible now.

But later on in your chess career, don't forget about Mr. Silman... :-)

After the most recent games that I've dropped, I think that I need to go back to the tactics books again. 😕

i would suggest 'Chess' by Polgar which contains 5000 chess puzzles as well as hundreds of basic endgame motifs and hundreds of complete short games.

The Art of the middle game by Kerres and Kotov. Lot's of MODERN strategy, perhaps not for the real beginner 😉

My System by Aaron Nimzowitsch is good, though i have to say i've gone off it a little.

A good book i got recently is The Life and games of Michael Tal, lot's of entertaining analysis, a bit more fun than the others but no less valid for it 😉

I collect chess books and have seen plenty. Nobody mentioned my first chess book "Logical Chess Move by Move" by Chernev. Explains every move. This is a must for a beginner. Some people consider it the best chess book ever. Some say it is too basic (but they are not beginners) "My System" is great also. The book by Polgar will keep you busy forever. It would be good. I got mine cheap-look around. I always start at Amazon.com and then sometimes get the used books or try Half.com for the best deals. For tactics "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate" by Reinfeld and "1001 Brilliant Chess Sacrifices and Combinations" are both cheap and excellent. Endgames: "Pandolfini's Endgame Course" would be a good start. Also reasonably priced. I like Silman's but I would wait until you played more.
