I used to play a U.S.C.F chess expert. His favorite saying was,

Oh, he kept playing chess, he just thought everybody was scum!
Interestingly, he finally made U.S.C.F. master and never played
another tournament game because he didn't want to lose
his master rating! No kidding! 🙂

Resting on his laurels, atop a rather large ego... bet he didn't sleep as comfortably as me, and that's only during games😉
