black will need to check and mate quickly cause of the pawns of the left, they are covered by the rook so could easily be promoted

What about moving knight to c3? Its first what I could advice. Moving pawn to d3 isnt bad too, but Nc3 is better.

Does Nc3 offer prospects for a winning advantage, or should black seek a draw (as he is a pawn down)?

Nc3 is the best move by far, then he takes with bishop, then check him with Rxc2+ only move is to Kb1, therefore Rc3+/kb2, Rc2/kb1, promote d-pawn= D1++

but 2.Bxc3 is a horrid move. Can your analysis support the strength of 1...Nc3 after white follows with a reasonable move?

1. ...Nc3 seems to win for black. 2. Bxc3?? is mate in 4 for black

in fact, moving the d2 bishop at all is mate

so...white has to defend it with Kc1 (Nc3 opens a discovered attack on the d2 bishop by the rook, for those who don't notice)

then 2. ...Rg1+ 3. Kb2 Rxa1 4. Kxa1 Bxc2 and black wins

Perhaps you can point out where I went wrong.

I would have gone for Nc3 but it looks like Ng3 is pretty good...

The problem with 49...cxb4ch is that black loses the pawn that restrains white's king if black's king goes after the kingside.
Instead
48.Kxc3 Kf4! 49.b4 h5 (not 8...cxb4 9.axb4 which draws) 50.b5 Kg3 51.Kd2 Bf3 52.a4 Kxh4 53.a5 Bb7 54.a6 Bc8 wins
or if
49. bxc5 Kg3 (not ..Bf3, Kb4 Bc6, Ka4 Kg3, Kb6 and black won't have enough time to queen successfully) 50.c6 Kxh4 51.c7 Bg4 and wins.
