Hi,
I'm new to the game of chess and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how to improve. are there any good sites that can teach me stuff like openings, middle game etc and just general tips?? i've had a quick look myself but haven't found anything that i dont already know. i am aware of all the special moves, (forks etc) but feel i'm missing something as when i come up against a decent player (1300+) i usually come unstuck.
Cheers

Focus on lots of tactical puzzles, read all of Dan Heisman's Novice Nook articles that are archived at chesscafe.com, and check your games against a database to see where you could have improved an opening move. Learn 1 new move for your reprtoire from each game and eventually you should be ok.

ok that would be great. Thanks!

Game 945207
Game 910500
(remember, i am a beginner!)
On your first game, move # 6, #14, and #16 are your biggest mistakes in the game, first of all, # 6 was a very bad move, A bishop is far worth more then a pawn, # 14 is bad too as a Knight is worth more then a pawn, so try not to trade them, #16 once you get practice, you know you'll want to avoid getting into situations like this, I wouldve moved pawn to g3 If I was in that position. Im not good chess player myself, so let the pros tell you more
In the second game, your first mistake was playing against Mr. Shogi 😉. I recently played 2 games against him and I came undone in both. I managed to pull out a win in one due to a tactical oversight on his part. He's tough...feel no shame in losing to him😀
For reference, here are my games against him...
Game 935393
Game 935394
thanks for the help. forget the 3rd game i posted, if you could look at this game that i've just lost and tell me where i went wrong and how i could improve, that would be great!!
Game 967866
i appreciate all the help
Joe, I just had a look at that game. Don't take this the wrong way, but it would really be difficult to point to any single mistake. You are not seeing threats as simple as 1 move deep. My first suggestion is, after each move your opponent makes, look carefully at the board and ask yourself this question. If he could move again, what would he most likely do? Now look for all of the good answers to that question, not just the most obvious. When you see the main threat (and as you get better, the secondary threat...I'm sure players stronger than me would say that there is more as well) you will be able to respond accordingly. Always consider what your opponent is trying to do. This doesn't mean play defensively, just make sure you aren't getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar.

I wonder which is correct?
