I think it depends on the quality of it's opening book, against a computer with a good opening book choosing a solid opening that limits the tactics and keeps the position closed might be best, however if the computer you are playing has a opening book that isn't extensive I think the your best bet are lines where you sacrifice material for something that is over the computer's horizon, since in the opening stages there are a lot of pieces on the board the computer can't calculate at the same speed. For example after 1e4 e5 2Nf3 Nc6 3Bc4 Bc5 4c3 Nf6 5 d4 exd4 6 cxd4 Bb4+ 7 Nc6 Nxe4 8 0-0 Bxc3 9d5
let's say that the computer left it's opening book,it will try to hold on to it's extra piece by either 9Na5 or 9 Ne5, this is bad however the problem is deeper than the computer can calculate. The idea is computers with lacking opening books can be fooled into lines where it thinks it's winning when in fact it's loosing.Of course you have to know these lines exactly to be able to play them.

For anyone who plays chess against a computer regularly, what opening typically works best? Sometimes, I've played the computer and it (obviously) responds differently to the same opening, but I was interested in any generally solid opening against a computer...

1.)Chessmaster 9000 - blows me away of course.
2.) Mephisto Chess Explorer - rated around 2000 USCF. I suggest this little baby to anyone who wants a powerful chess computer for around $50 from Radioshack. It's a monster in my opinion. I've never seen anyone human defeat it. Beats 99% of human opponents. But, Jade from Chessmaster 9000 defeated it. That's what amazed me. I put them up against one other. Took her 1260 something moves! HAHA! Let me tell you! The struggle was unbelievable! What a WAR, buddy! I analyzed the game and everything. Beautiful!

Id also like to add that the Froms Gambit is very unsound, if white plays correctly he shouldnt have a problem winning
