No expert myself, but the chess books may state it as the best move, when i play higher ranked players ( say 150 points above my rank), I tend to use un common openings as it gets them thinking.
Otherwise by playing the "standard" openings i feel you will be playing into there hands as they will take you apart with there superior knowledge of chess.
Then again still cant seem to get much higher than i am now

a silly thing to say. You have to take into acct your playing style and your opponent's...e.g. if your opponent likes tactics and fire works but is loathe to playing slow positional games (e.g. kasparov) then play something like 1.d4!)

Kramnik beat Kasparov quite convincingly in the 2000 world championship tournament NEVER opening with e4!!!!!!!!!!
