To get a more accurate flavour of the merits of an opening & it's popularity you could use a database search.

Well you'll generally get very biased opinions of the openings based on asking about them in here.
I think GM Julian Hodgson used to make a pretty good living by playing The Trompowksy Attack in tournaments and by writing books and starring in videos teaching the opening. I haven't heard anything about what he's doing these days.
The last time that I defeated an Expert (in this case he was a former master) in a tournament game, I was on the White side of a Torre Attack.
