How often do upsets like this happen?

Although I am very happy to win this game, it also really annoys me! I know I can play much better than my rating suggests but I make too many mistakes.

Still this is definetly my best ever win as seeing as I started the game at about 950!

Looks like Black had a bout of chess blindness on move 25.

I can just feel myself letting go of the mouse and screaming in that position.

Blunders come in sizes but they are still blunders.

I have seen a lot worse on here than someone dropping a Rook.

    Good game well played.
You had a perptual v a high graded player and knocked it back.
    Good for you.

    This bit:

".....my best ever win as seeing as I started the game at about 950."

Does that mean you only started playing chess at 10 minutes to ten. 09:50. 😉

I played a set of 23 games against my good friend Neckodeemus before he went back to his boxing. He's much lower rated than me but is a pure bred fighter. In this game, my only loss of the set, I just imploded. The endgame is real by the way - he's not being funny, his chess is actually that raw.

I bet he'd be one heck of a chessboxer.

I am afraid that means my rating was at 950!

what do you mean by 'you had a perptual v a high graded player and knocked it back'?

I guess he means that in the endgame you could have chosen to go for following perpetual sequence of checks (or another one I haven't noticed).

    1. Qf6+ Qg7(forced) 2. Qd8+ Qg8(forced) 3. Qf6+ etc.

This would have resulted in a draw, which is ok against higher rated players, because you still gain points.

    Ciao.

Edit: I noticed a more likely candidate (at the point the game was still more or less even) which you could actually play:

    17. Qg5+ Kh8 (forced) 18. Qf6+ Kg8 (forced) ....

    it was here:
I thought you had spotted it, declined it and went for the win.
(though the material is level and the postion evenish)
You played 17 d5. trying to get the g2 Bishop working.
Most would have grabbed the perpetual being 600+ points behind on rating.

(After you have seen that perhaps give Game 8312769 another look.
You played well setting up the back rank trick then turned his act of sheer
desparation into the winning move. White's position is clearly resignable.
He was gving a check before dying that is all. move 24.
Take your time, look at all possibilities, don't trust their moves and don't
underestimate yourself. You are not a 950 player.)

Why not 13.Nd2 - or better yet 13.a4! - taking advantage of the fact that Black's Bishop remains trapped?

Black's 10...Qd7?? was a blunder almost as bad as his miscue on move 25. He needed to do something to stop his Bishop from being trapped - 10...a5 comes to mind.

This is the way you will raise your rating - not only by avoiding blunders, but seeing more tricks like this.
