Here's Jenn Shahade's view. Gates' Nxe5? was horrible, he could have had a winning game with Re1!

He might have had a winning position but you could see he was totally intimidated by Magnus, it wouldn't have mattered one way or the other, he still would have lost.

True, but I think I could make it to at least 20 moves by not blocking my d-pawn with Bd3? in the opening. 😛

Bill Gates - Magnus Carlsen. Televison Skittles game 2014

Apparently Bill had two minutes - Magnius 30 seconds.
Too awful to be stage managed.

Bill is a just a normal bod who knows the moves of the game.

Did you notice how he was clearly intimidated by Maggie?

    B00 KP, Nimzovich defence

Looked like fun. To bad he didn't get two games.

If Bill had played 9.Re1 he would have had a winning position.

Maybe someone could play a game out from Rook E1 to see how it might've gone, but obviously someone above 1800 rated points.

Gates must be in the 500 rating area.

I'd add that 2 minutes seems like an insanely fast time control for a new player. Heck, there are experienced players who hate it too.

Love the way the guardian article puts ? Against carlsen moves.
