You need to try & get all your pieces involved though & I think just glancing at the game, I would have played R(a)e8 at some point toward the end of the opening/start of middlegame if at all possible.
You first moved it on move 41.

Well after your opponent plays 18.Qh6 the best you can do is put him in check until his king gets to a safe place. Then I think there is no way of stopping the mate.
