You want to give your opponent the chance to make a blunder of his own, hence the need to keep some sort of pressure on him. If you can't do it, the best choice may be to just resign and try to do better next game.

Up on my white horse I climbed and pointed the way with step by step fen's
(in the days before the moving PGN thing) showing the lad the way.
