Indeed. I remember 1972, when Fischer became the champion, EVERYBODY started playing chess and blabbered on about how we showed those rooskies a thing or two.

Ironic, since Fischer was actually a sleeper-agent of the Russians. He was in fact programmed to lose, but his gigantic ego won out over all those hypno-sessions fueled by the secret Russian mind-control drugs. The cognitive dissonance from this intense, inner psychological conflict resulted in the behavioral problems we see today.

The Russians had a deactivation method standing by -- a code phrase which, when said to Fischer, would trigger a neural implant to emit a seizure-inducing electrical storm of such violence that he would be reduced to a harmless mental vegetable (and therefore unable to betray them).

The code phrase, "You think you are an idiot", could not safely be delivered by the Russians themselves, since security was too tight, so they sent an intermediary: a Cuban IM and member of the Communist Party, who was willing to do what he was told without understanding why, was to quietly introduce the code phrase during a tournament game. Unfortunately, his heavy accent -- "Jew think you are an idiot" -- obscured the message, and the consequent firestorm in Bobby's brain, as the neural implant was triggered, merely inculcated a fierce, wild anti-Semitism that seemed to spring from nowhere.
