When reading chess books is it easier to just try to do the examples in your head or to actually play the whole game out on your own board? I am reading "Art Of Attack in Chess" and I have been playing through the examples on my own board. It seems like it takes forever just to get through a page. Will I learn just as much b y playing through them in my head?

GM Jonathan Tisdall stated he did not reach Grandmaster strength until he practiced playing over games from books and magazines in his head. Doing so improved his ability to calculate at the board. I'm sure it was easier for him than for us because he was already a strong master when he started doing it.
Originally posted by I Falco II read that book also. I use a real board with all the books I read.

Tactics puzzles I do in my head. That how I improved my calculation and visualization. After a while you can read a book and not require a board for several moves.
