From Fred Reinfelds' old _1001 Winning Ches Sacrifices and Combinations_, which I've found quite good and correct, is this position, #952:
The mainline solution (white to move) is:
1 Rxh7 RxRh7
2 Rh1xRh7 Rf7
3 Rh6 Nb6-c4
4 Rxg6 ch resigns
But it also says if
2 ... KxR
3 Qh5 "and mate in two more moves"
After 3 ... Kg8 and
4 Bxg6
doesn't
4 ... Be8 hold for a bit?
Thanks!

often hearing how tactics is the key to sucess for amateurs, i will test to see if it is true. as i play in OTB tournment only once a year, i will see if my performance improves. ( i plan to play in the las vegas tournament this coming june. )
by the way, how long did it take for you to finish the book?

Owing it to this book, i performed very well in the recent amateur section of the Las Vegas chess tournament. The hypothesiss was that for amateurs ( US rating under 2000 ) openings are not critical, and tactics are the key to scoring well.
On and off, maybe two-three months. But I did not work on it every day.
Originally posted by tonytiger41Good for you. Glad you did well. Yes, the book helped my chess too, as I said. As to the "openings are not critical," that may be true of openings in which responses are not only logical but LOOK logical as well. If you're playing the King's Gambit, however, the right (and sometimes ONLY playable) move can appear truly bizarre, and opening book knowledge there is vital. Been there, gotten burned 15 moves down the line for not castling into an open field! ;-)
