I've heard from a couple of people that many years ago (long before he was Pope) John Paul II beat Capablanca in a game of chess. I haven't been able to confirm this, and I suspect it is just a legend and not really true.... anyone have the scoop?

Well, Karol Wojtyla used to play chess and he must have been
a reasonably good player because he made it into the
"Batsford Chess Openings" by Gary Kasparov and Raymond Keene.
See page 51 , note 15.

I never heard of a story him playing Capablanca though ...
