I hope you do realise the fact that in drawn positions, like 3-fold repetition or 50-moves positions, the draw has to be claimed (despite the fact that the position is drawn, period).
>> "despite the fact that the position is drawn, period"

A position is either drawn or not. Prior to any claim (3 fold or 50 move) the position is not drawn. It may be drawn following a claim.

maybe I am not understanding something. I do not understand why people got in this great fuss over a move that persons of that rating should have understood in the first place. I am not saying that the players involved were stupid (look at my rating and you will see why) but why get nit-picky over something that rarely happens? Why are people so quick to correct someone?

Interpreting and clarifying the finer points of the rules is a perfectly legitimate matter for debate. That it doesn't interest amuse or entertain you isn't a good reason not to do it. One of the enduring qualities of chess is that it continues to produce unexpected and curious scenarios....the unexpected win from an apparently losing position and so on. I'll agree that not everyone likes this sort of thing but I don't think it's difficult to understand why some people do.

Some will have learned from this thread, others will have taken part for a laugh and others will have been seeking to test the rules to be sure they are sound...and why not. By describing this thread as being "nit-picky over something that rarely happens" is to miss the point. Surely by presenting such a critique you are yourself being nit-picky about what is and isn't appropriate content for a thread.

Yes it is an interesting thread and good fun.

I'll tell the world about it on Chandler Cornered by the end of the week. Have just posted some stuff about chess cigarette cards.
Need to let that get digested before I do another.

Of course I shall embelish a little (a lot) - it's what peopl ...[text shortened]... -15 points against and won by a cheap trick?
These are the games we like - proper chess.
Good site and well worth a visit...and clicking on the Chandler Cornered corner!.

(NB In Peter Wells book "Winning with the Trompovsky" chapter 9 has a creditable explanation as to why after: 1.d4...Nf6, 2.Bg5...d5, 3. Bxf6 white is playing for an advantage....although it's an excellent book I've chosen to drop the Trompovsky after finding it too difficult.)
