Neither. Chess is a philosophy. One either embraces it or discards it.

Chess is a pastime, like parchisi or miniature golf, tho not having the charm of the dice rattling in the cup, nor the stubby pencils they give you to keep score.

That has me wondering if anybody ever built a miniature golf course based on a chess theme. The course near me when I was a kid was based on dinosaurs. The final hole made you try to putt the ball into the dino jaw when it momentarily dropped into an open position.

The first sentence of my first chess book, given to me on my seventh birthday, The Principles of Chess by James Mason (not the actor, wiseasses!) sums it up best to me: "Chess is a process of thought conditioned and limited by the Institutes and Rules of the Game." I've yet to hear it said better.

Ah, yes, Mr. Mason of whom Lasker said, "the Celtic part of his brain heated up and he would leave the board at a critical stage and not return." Apparently the demon alcohol had a deleterious effect on his natural chess ability.

Good ones! I read that Einstein was a friend of Lasker's and didn't enjoy the combative spirit he saw brought out in Lasker by chess.
