An interesting way to improve one's chess, that I employ frequently, is to set up the board in some position, and see if you can retrace the moves back as far as possible (ideally to the start of the game). Anyone else do this?

Yes, it's really interesting. I did it many years ago. I have a small booklet called 'Chess with Sherlock Holmes' by Raymond Smullyan. In it you find 50 positions, which one should trace back to the beginning. It's challenging and amusing, but I'm not sure if it improves your chess.

Greetings from, erm, the middle of nowhere. I started playing chess backwards after reading a fairly decent suspense novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte called "The Flanders Panel".
