Chess books

Since I joined RHP, I have come to realise just how little I know about chess.
I see terms like Caro-Kann, Queen's Gambit, French Defence and a dozen others every time I look at the forums.
I see so many terms and strategies I know nothing at all about that I'm sure the only way to get on is to read a chess book.
Can anyone recommend a good chess book that is available in the UK?
