fritz probaly discards axb6 because it allows for an easier breakthrough (only 1 pawn protects a6 whereas 2 pawns protect c6)
as for the second position i bet fritz has a built in table for KPvK endings so it never analyzes the position it just moves the king in front of the pawn for a standard draw that works all the time (whereas you can't always take the pawn)
i bet in this position fritz always takes the pawn (even though whatever it used in the first daigram would still draw)
