i am a 1400-1450 player and i quite often play on in a hopeless position. if i'm playing someone worse than me obviously i can hope they will make a stupid mistake and i can get a draw or stalemate. when i'm playing someone better than me, i learn a lot from seeing how they 'finish me off'. i'm not very good at endgames, and i often screw up when tryin ...[text shortened]... can finish off without thinking too hard about the moves. and it's useful for dunces like me 🙂
Everyone sometimes carries on in losing positions, just because the position is theoretically lost doesn't mean it is easy to convert (like K+B+N v K) and then you are justified in trying to save the game, and if your intention is to learn then a small amount of communication helps - one opponent messaged me telling me why he wanted to carry on in a hopeless position and so I didn't mind. And in fairness there's one or two games I should probably resign...
Thank you (to most of you) for your constructive comments on my question. Bobbob, since when has having K vs K+Q been comparable to playing black after e4 c5 Ne2? (I'll point out the ? is for a question, not commenting on the move for your benefit bobbob).
I agree with the rest of the people here that I should not ask my opponents to resign if I get such an endgame, but I would appreciate it that if they made a quick glance at my grade (albeit provisional) that they would realise i am not going to stalemate them with K+Q, especially in correspondence chess.
I could, however, understand people who would play on in K+N+B vs K, as not many people know how to force mate with these (although I do! 🙂 )

okay fair enough. i do msg in this situation, and actually no-one has (said that they) mind!
i think delaying a lost game has usually to do with rating manipulation, which is discussed ad nauseam elsewhere...
