I'm in New York for 3 weeks. Does anybody know where I can catch a bit of chess. I thought I might try the Marshall Club to see if Gata Kamsky turns up for the NY Masters on Tuesday.

I tried Greenwich Village Park but they only wanted to play for money. Call me a purist but I just wanted a few games for fun. I have a funny feeling they were hustlers too.

Does anyone have any pointers?

The Marshall Chess Club seems to be the way to go. I was in New York once for a day, and wanted to try both the Marshall and Manhattan Chess Clubs, but only had time for one. Unfortunately I chose the Manhattan. It barely even qualifies as a "club" anymore. The two guys that were there when I walked in said that the Marshall is where all the action is. This was about two or three years ago, so times may have changed.

The only real chess clubs left in NYC are the Marshall,or the Polgar club in Rego Park,Queens. The Manhatten CC has been defunct for several years. You were right about the Washington Square crowd-they are nothing but a bunch of sleazoid hustlers.

Go see Maurice Ashley, hes the cool black GrandMaster, I checkmated him at a Simul at the Oakland zoo before!! Thats right people, I beat a Grandmaster at a simul, who wants my autograph? 🙄🙄😛

Oh and as for the hustlers, people are mad because these guys are good and destroy masters daily. These guys in the park are often some of the coolest people as well. I met a guy in NY once, he was insane, but damn was he a good chessplayer, turns out he got his three norms and is now a Master. Good for him, don't be afraid to lose to these "hustlers", they are just making a buck with what skills they have, which is what we do with a degree, correct?

Sorry, daster, but I must disagree with you re: the hustlers at WSP. They are not "cool",nor does their gamesmanship do them credit. To them, "win by any means necessary",is their creed,up to,and including outright cheating, threats, and intimidation. Anyone who manages to win any appreciable money off these slimeballs better be able to run fast,as otherwise he will be mugged by the hustler's buddies before he can leave the table. I've seen it happen all too often.

Wow they are lonely semi drugged chessplayers, not mafia hitmen. I played with them many a times, it seems someone is scared. They are good, end of story.

There are street chessplayers playing for money in many major cities. It hardly seems fair to presume criminal intent.

I have personally seen knives pulled, punches thrown,muggings-all over a 5 dollar chess game. These guys only use chess to feed their drug habits.
