I noticed that Grandmasters always say "We analyzed with Fritz and found..." Why not Chess Master? Is Fritz better than Chess Master? Which one is better for teaching?

Fritz is better then CM if you are a good chess player. It's way stronger them CM.

If you are learning chess then CM is much better.

I have both, Deep fritz 8 and CM 10000.

I played several matches against them on different computers.

Fritz 8 on a 800 Mhz = CM 10000 on a 2.4 Ghz

Impressive hey?

Fritz is probably considered better because it can beat CM when you play them against each other.

As for teaching, they're both crap, frankly. CM has some good puzzles and a rather good end game training feature to tech beginners the opposition, but i finished all the excercises in about a week and found that there was nothing particularly special about them. They were fun, and i did learn some things, but studying Master games improved my chess much more.

If you want to program to play against, get CM, as it has different characters with different styles which is good fun and good practise. If you want a proffesional engine to analyse your games, get frits. CM is a Toy (a little harsh perhaps..), Fritz is a tool.

Yes CM has a lot of tutorials/puzzles that would help a beginning to intermediate player, but if you just gotta have the strongest program, then Fritz or Shredder are the way to go.

Ok thanks guys. I also noticed how ChessMaster sucks up to Waitzkin by putting him among the Grandmasters, even though he is a (relatively) wimpy IM who quit playing chess once he realized he couldn't become an IM. I made Waitzkin and Anand play eachother, and in one game, Waitzkin won! How could a 2400 USCF beat the 2000-2002 FIDE world Champion and the current FIDE blitz Champion?

Waitzkin is a GM. He quit chess some years ago.

CM and Waitzkin are closely linked. The program is based on his chess career.

CM10 is pants don’t waste your money, Fritz comes with a range of tutorials from IM Andrew Martin aimed at players from beginner to advanced level. The benefits of Fritz for any player are as followed

Stronger chess engine(s)
Weaker chess engines
You can play 960 chess, Giveaway Chess or various other variants online.
Ability to load up just about any engine in Fritz
Ability to create/load databases
Years free subscription to playchess
Easy to use analysis board which you can use symbols/arrows on etc.
Better community support for Fritz GUI in the way of opening books/databases/updates etc.
Buying CM10 will make you look like a patzer

I agree. I have both CM10 and Fritz 8 (who makes me look like a patzer).
There is no way in hell that a 2000 rated character in CM10 can beat a 2000 rated ELO player in "real life".
Personally i think that the personalities are about 400-500 rating points over-rated on CM.

I dont understand why the guys didnt test this program against say a thousand people and figure out the personality ratings from that. The way they've done this is so stupid and it makes Waitzkin look like a patzer. I mean, i dont think there is anyone on RHP that could beat the 14 year old Waitzkin. I mean, he was 11 years old when he drew against Kasparov in a primary school simultaneous against the world champ. Him and only one other kid could draw, the other 200 some obviously lost quickly. Shame on you Gary :-))

Fritz on the other hand is almost accurate from rating 1800 onwards (when u play rated game). I think Fritz on 1500 is actually a joke as it blunders almost every game.

I dont really think fritz is accurate when playing at 1800, it has a tendency to throw out 10 GM level moves then drop a knight in the most 1200 player fashion, then GM for 10 more moves and so on. I never play against engines anymore but when I did I always found Crafty to give an enjoyable game at 1800ish ratings.

Chessmaster is designed by gamers; Fritz is created by chess professionals. The evaluation features of Chessmaster are a joke that no GM, nor any serious player, would consider using. The engine is only slightly weaker than Fritz, but the interface in nearly useless ( unless you are a child with limited computer experience, in which case you might find it "friendly" ).

Note: I have a used extensively CM 2100, CM 3000, CM 4000, CM 5000, CM 5500, CM 7000, and recently purchased and train against CM 10th edition. I also have Fritz 7, Fritz 8, Fritz 9, Hiarcs 9, and Arena with 64 Winboard and UCI engines. The UCI engines work in the Fritz interface, and I often use Rybka 32-bit beta, Ruffian, and others. Fritz is open every day on my box; Chessmaster every few weeks. I've been playing against Chessmaster since 1989; Fritz since 2002.

Another downside for CM is that it requires you to put your install CD into the computer every 14 days/sessions (or something like that) to "verify" it. If you don't have the CD it won't let you play until you do that.

I learned this the hardway, while out of town on business, waiting on a flight, i figured I would play a game of chess against CM. Well low and behold, in my prepation to leave town on business, I had not thought "Hey, let me include my CM cd." I was more than slightly upset when I could not play software I had legally payed for because I didnt have the CD handy.

I think there are some hacks you can download/install from the internet to circumvent this "feature", but if you install such programs you deserve what you get. (ie: virus, backdoors, etc)

If you go to Josh Waitzkin's bio, it says he is an International Master, Not a GrandMaster http://joshwaitzkin.com/bio.html

Don't forget, Fritz gives you free access to playchess.com, one of the best internet sites (f not the best). I also don't like to play Fritz in "friend" mode because it seems to aim for a draw for most of the game. The other stuff, database, analysis, playing engine, etc. is the best. I also have chessmaster 10 and am also annoyed having to carry the disk everywhere just to have a game. I'm sure anybody familiar with codes can get around it, but then why have it in the first place? They're only punishing the computer illiterate, who are not likely to steal the damn thing.

There are patches you can install so you can play CM without the cd. Before I never had a problem with the lectures but after awhile they started skipping or freezing on me. I put the cd in but it's still the same.

But if you look around i'm sure you can find those patches.

My mistake.
