what does a plus sign (+) mean in chess notation?
I have just purchased my first chess book (Silman's "The Amateur's Mind&quot😉
but I can't always follow the strings of notation.

2.Bxb5+ c6

Is that two moves? Bishop takes the piece at b5 and then his opponant moves to c6?
So what's the plus?

Also... what does this mean: 5.Rad1 f6 ?

Is the "a" short for attacks?

If anyone can help or can suggest a book or web site that would give me a list of
notation marks, I'd sure appreciate it!

The + means check and the a means that the rook on the a file goes to d1 (sometimes its possible for both rook to go here)
