Summary: Dutch player in team match left the playing hall to 'get some fresh air', the arbiter followed him and caught him using pocket fritz. whether he did this to analyse the game was not clear.
Anyways, he's banned for the rest of this season and the next two seasons as well.

The guy has a dutch ELO of 2220. Makes one wonder how many of those points he cheated out of others.

Maybe he didn't cheat and he was analysing the game. It is allowed.

No it's not. You can't analyse the game at all until it's over.

i can't wait for the time controls to be 1 hour per player and no leaving the table.

What I don't understand is why the guy didn't just go into a toilet cubicle and use his pocket Fritz there? That way he could have cheated quite easily without any danger of being caught.

Maybe arbiters should be given permission to search everyone before the game and confiscate anything that can be used as an aid. That would include mobile phones, pocket chess sets, PDA's, etc. But what if someone refused to be searched? Would they be automatically defaulted? If there were female players, they would probably need to be searched by another female. But female arbiters are very rare.

I believe that some decrease of total time of the games would help...

Yes they can, as long as the opponents move has been sealed. Over the board, an unknown opponents move can be analysed.

That may help prevent cheating, but it will also spoil chess for the 99.9% of players who do not cheat.

I agree, it would also introduce a fun minigame of booting your opponent hard under the table to try to get them to fall off their chair thus losing the game.

actually they could leave the time as it is and make a rule of no getting up from table.
