I have been playing for a while, but tonight, i was told something i did not agree with, and would like some Clarification.

Is it legal for an opposing player to castle if one of my pieces is attacking their rook. The person I was playing tonight( Not On-line) said they could castle because their King way not crossing a square that is being attacked. Is this the case? I am not sure anymore. Your assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

yes it is possible.

The king squares are the ones you have to be concerned about. If you are attacking the rook, but the king is not in check, the square the king is moving to is not attacked, and the square the king is skipping over is also not attacked, then the castling is legal (assuming neither the king nor the relevant rook has moved).

This is a common point of confusion people have about castling.

Put more simply
the king or the squares it crosses must not be under threat
also neither the king nor rook must have already moved
i.e. yes you can castle despite the rook being under threat as the king is not in check and the squares in between are not under threat

Legal or not. It is possible.

I once heard of a guy playing a game in a café, who managed to castle with the salt cellar from the tray of a passing waitress.

If you permit illegal moves - then it's no longer chess.
Illegal moves are not permitted - hence not possible in chess.

I wouldn't be happy if my opponent played out a full house of 8s and queens and claimed a win. No way, I would say.
