I got a bit annoyed because I ruined a few (probably a lot, actually) games because I played whilst drinking (even just a few drunken moves could ruin it). So, to get my chess "fix", I either played unrated games or played blitz chess, and stopped moving in rated games. My rating has increased a bit as a result. Not sure of the point of this topic actually (probably the drink again...), but it could be a tip for some other regular drunk player (if stating the obvious a bit).

Actually a lot of chessplayers tend to play stronger when being completely drunk. Has something to do with hubris I believe...

"Completely drunk" may be a bit exaggerated but it is true!!

A little bit of alcohol (1 beer, 1 or 2 fingers of Scotch) can help me relax and improve my game a bit. Especially after a difficult day at work or something.

Any more makes me *think* I'm playing better. After a night of shots and speed chess, I'm positively brilliant!

That's what I thought. Something about pride or arrogance or something. Surely it's about ability (or lack thereof)?

I can't stop at one or two though. Once I've started there's no stopping me (apart from running out of alcohol or money; or unconsciousness). And games tend to last beyond a couple...

You might want to seek help.

Why? Because I run out of alcohol all the time?

There's this interesting chess-variant called "drunken chess" and I even saw a board in a nearby store which I wanted to buy. Basically, the pieces are various tot glasses and the potency (and size) of the tot is directly proportional to the value of the piece. A pawn is a half-a-tot of something, and the queen is 3 or 4 tots vodka - or something like that. Basically, the idea is that if I capture your queen, I have to "drink her", etc. So, effectively, the stronger the player, the more quickly he/she will become drunk, leveling the playing field. Sounds nice, hey?

Alcohol gives some extra "unfounded" confidence.

Greekish mythology has a wonderful word for it in "hubris", which has something to do with humans thinking they are superior to the Gods on the Olympos 🙂

In short, alcohol takes away some of the hesitation a chess player might have and allows him to play better than normally!

I suspect he may of cheated a bit, you know like a pepper grinder for a Queen, ash trays for Rooks, conkers for Pawns, used chewing gum stashes for Knights and an Action Man for King - leaving the bottles for the Bishops! Simples!!:
