Took an openingsbook from the shelve, read the introduction,I was a bit surprised by the way this opening was described. Can you guess which opening this is?

The.....appeals to patient players, who relish fascinating endgame play.Even though it is one of the more popular defenses, the size of the repertoire is much smaller than in many other openings.Black gets to pare down the number of potential enemy strategies very quickly.The....also appeals to players with a strong fighting spirit.Tactics can dominate the middlegame, with long combinations involving temporary and permanent sacrifices. The stronger the endgame skills, the better, since the.... often leads to endgames which are difficult to win,or even draw(some of the time)! As you play the....,your understanding of many endgames, especially those with rooks and minor pieces, will broaden and deepen, making you a better overall player.

Sounds like the Caro-Kann to me.

"One of the more popular defenses" is the phrase that gives it away, making it the Sicilian Defense....or maybe the French.

It doesn't sound like the Sicilian; the riddle says it has a smaller repertoire than a lot of other defenses. I don't think it sounds like the Caro Kann, either. "Fighting spirit" and "Caro Kann" are seldom seen in the same sentence, and drawing the endgame is normally not a problem in the Caro Kann, if the game gets that far. It could be the French.

"the size of the repertoire is much smaller than in many other openings" ...this is the key!!
I mean, carokann and french have BIG repertoires (as far as I remember), but Pterov or the Scandinavian have less... I bet on these two, perhaps Petrov (tactical stuff..)
am I right?

sounds a lot like alekhines, which is both narrow and occasionally tactical.

The Caro-Kann it is!
The part about the fighting spirit is what surprised me a little.I never thought of the Caro as a fighting opening 😕

I kind of get the idea it woiuld be an opening with just a small amount of theory. I think that would knock out the Sicilian, Caro-Khan, and French.

Philidor's Defense has very little theory, and it would be somewhat difficult to think of this as the description, speaking as a non-Philidor player. But why assume a king-pawn opening defense? What about something like the Blackmar-Diemer? Pretty wild positions there with, I don't believe a lot of theory.

Hm... Good Riddle!

Missed the Scandinavian reference eariler... Didn't think of that possibility.🙄

Well, there are some variations where Black gets to be the guy that asks for the fight, but they're generally not considered as sound or as solid as the more mainline theories.
