These rules may be obvious to some but:
1. Do not forget which pieces are yours...it is not necessary to defend your king from your own queen and knight.
2. Do not play chess prior to your first cup of coffee....your queen may be forfeit.
3. Do not allow male friend to nibble on neck while playing chess...again, you may forfeit your queen.
Feel free to add your own rarely spoken of rules. I need all the help I can get.

A rule that people overlook, and this is a standard FIDE tournament rule:
If your opponent dies (literally) in front of the chess board, you automaticly get the win by default. And yes, this has happened once.

What the FIDE says about shooting your opponent?

A co-worker once asked me this question, which unfortunately is not chess related. "If the batter hits the ball over the fence, and has a heart attack while running the bases so that he never gets to home plate, is it a home run and does his run count?"
Originally posted by Paul DiracI believe that back in the 1930s or so there was a baseball player who hit a homerun and then slipped on first base and sprained his ankle, therefore he was unable to run the bases, so they simply had an alternate run the bases for him. The reason for making them run is more of a tradition then anything, sort of like how in NASCAR the winner will do a victory lap. Its just a chance for the homerun hitter to bask in his glory for a moment. π
