Can anyone recommend a chess site that is suitable, and safe, for a ten year old elementary school girl to play chess with other kids of her own age on?

How convenient.

I do not know if there is some playing client though but tutorials are surely there. You will hardly find specialized kids playing sites. But you can always make an account on freechess.org and download BabasChess interface. If you are worried about possible bad influence or innapropriate chat, just disable it. On freechess you can play against opponents of all levels.

Yahoo used to have a kids version, called yahooligans. It was basically yahoo chess with all chat disabled. It may still be there.

Don't ever start a kid on yahoo if you think of yourself as a responsible parent. Yahooligan may be safe today, but your child will grow comfortable with a terrible place for chess and will abandon the game in favor of idle chat with strangers.

Thank you all for the feedback. Will check some of those sites but don’t think that I will recommend any Yahoo sites after my experience there. Thanks again.
