I recieved this book as a gift, and I looked at the reviews on amazon.com. While one person said it helped him improve from 1200(my rating) to about 1600 or 1700. One other person on amazon.com said it was useless because it was sparsley commented, and was either to hard or too easy for the intended audience. For those of you who own it, is it worth studying from or am I wasting my time
Originally posted by chesskid001I started reading it, RahimK finished the whole thing and said it was quite helpful. It looks like a very solid book to me, I think its a little too sophisticated for you right now, its the third volume in a series of his books, Ive read the first two volumes, and am working on Chess Tactics for the Tournament Player right now. Maybe you should read the second volume before reading this one.

the first two volumes are supposed to take you to about 1800 and volume 3 chess tactics for the tournament player and chess strategy for the tournament player are supposed to take you to master. (so they claim) IMO the first 2 volumes should take you to about 1400-1500 and the other two volumes will take you to about 1700. Powershaker said the first two volumes took himn to 1800 playing strength, so he said.

Yes, the first two books will give you a solid enough foundation to get you to about 1400 ish like you estimated. I haven't read the Tactics book, but studying tactics is important in improving. A book like the Alburt book, or winning chess Tactics by Seirawan is good for understanding how tactics and combinations work, then work through puzzle books at a rate of 5-15 puzzles a day. One author wrote a book on intense tactics study, and it undoubtedly will give you good results, but the price many pay is a complete loss of interest in the game (including the author). Remember to have fun.
