I mean like chessbase server where people actually play other people such as gms fms and ims and other people across the world. Not a engine.
It is very worthwhile. The interface is great, the lectures and live feeds are brilliant and they do their darnest to pick up cheats.
Originally posted by XanthosNZIf you buy Fritz, Shredder, Junior, Tiger, Hiarcs, etc., you get a playing engine (often several, as Comet and Crafty usually come packaged with Fritz); one year of access to the playchess server, where you can play online, watch GM games, view excellent lectures (including archived lectures for 2 ducats--22 cents), and even watch live press conferences; and a database with the ability to create more. All this is about $50 USD.

For ~$150 you can buy ChessBase 9, which comes with an earlier version of Fritz for analysis, and tremendous database features (including a database of 2.9 million games--$100 more gets several thousand of these annotated), but not the playing features of Fritz and friends.
I bought ChessBase 8 a few years ago, as well as Fritz and Hiarcs. Total price of these three was ~$220 USD. It was some of the best money I've spent.
For an example of some of the many benefits I've gained, look at

I played this game on RHP. After it was over, Hiarcs analyzed the game while I slept, creating all the annotations you see. Then it took only a few minutes to create the webpage with CB 8 and upload it.
