I've recently been introduced to chinese chess and I think I like it more than regular chess. There are only 5 pawns and there is no queen but there are knights, cannons and rooks. The cannons have to hop over another piece in order to attack an enemy piece on the other side. I think it is better because trading your pieces will not bring you into a winnable endgame, you have to constantly be shifting your attack trying to win material without losing any attacking pieces because the pawns cannot promote.
Anyone else played it?

did you know that there's no castling, bishop(elephant its called) can only move 2 squares diagonally and cannot cross the river, the king(general) must stay within the 3x3 square, and the game itself is a pain in the butt?!?!
Does it play anything like Shogi (Japanese chess). A Japanese friend of mine tried to teach me and it was so alien to me. I simply didn't like the different rules and moves of certain pieces. I told him Chess had a certain harmony to it, the way the pieces complemented each other, and that hundreds of years of refinement had made the game perfect. He said the same thing about Shogi, that it too had reach a certain state of perfection, I just didnt see it. (He also mentioned that Chess is not very popular in Japan, one of the very few countries that hasn't embraced it yet.)
I guess we both didn't spend enough time on the other game to appreciate all its glories.
