Only Chess

This has probably been asked before but a quick (and quite lazy) search didn't bear fruit so I'll try.

I would like Chessmaster 9000 to give me feedback on games, to help me analyze where I went wrong in games that I lost. My *understanding* is that CM9K can take a game I've played and then as the moves are progressed it would provide feedback. Am I out to lunch here or is this possible, and if so, how?

yes, it can. you need a copy of your game in pgn format. go to the games room, select file, load, select your file and the game will be loaded. then select mentor and game analysis. select the number of seconds for cm9k to analyze each move and voila, your game will be analysed.

Just remember, that the pgn format for RHP makes the castling moves (o-o and o-o-o) with small o's and CM9000 only takes them with big O's, so just change that in the PGN and the game should be taken

I have discovered that if you load the rhp pgn into winboard, you can then load the file from the winboard without problems. I am still learning the ins and outs of cm9000. I have never had a program like it.
Have you done any of the josh tours yet?

I've gone through most of the annotated games by Josh, just a few left in the "endgame course". Definitely worth looking through - both entertaining and educational. Very helpful.

And to analyze games played on RHP, you don't need any "middle man" software - you just copy the pgn of the game (remembering to edit all o-o's and o-o-o's into O-O's and O-O-O's before copying), then go to the game room, and select "Paste" and "PGN" under the edit menu. Then you can just select "Game analysis..." from the mentor menu.

I do like rapella and paste to winboard first... rather than hunting my text for the castles...

Winboard is great to have just for playing combo's and backing up. Using Anylize board at RHP I get lost and forget how I got to a position since I can't back it up.

When I use CM9K I let it think 10 seconds per move and it seems to find a lot of good info to tell me. Best I've done so far is a 32 move game 94% agree rate.

I am sure the more I let CM9K think the worse it will say I did!

Fun!

Pyrroh,
I really don't think you need it!!
I am getting anoyed with the lead in to josh. You know...City scenes, smelling flowers crapola. The insight to the games are friggin great though and have really changed the way I look at games. Now if they could teach tempo I think I would beat you.

I don't know about that... I've been improving a lot in the last few months (studyig more chess then I'd like to admit too though), but I think my chess skills still need a lot of work. The more you learn, the more you realize there is to learn. And as to my rating - people just keep resigning for no good reason! 🙄 I just recently got two resignations from a 2000+ player who was taking a break from the site and resigning all his games. So up goes my rating again! 🙂

Besides, the city scenes + the flower smelling is kinda nice I think... teaches you a little patience while waiting for the good stuff... 🙂

Thanks for the help guys. I used it to look at a spanking I received from ouroboros (a highly-skilled player I've run into in tournaments and seiges) and it was quite helpful. Much appreciated.
