I started playing the Petroff recently when I came across the Cochrane Gambit. I was wondering if anyone has played against it and would like to recommend a few lines.

If you do not know what i am talking about here are the moves.

1.e4e5 2.Nf3Nf6 3.Nxe5d6 4.Nxf7Kxf7 5.d4

My previous game went like this 5...c5 6.dxc5d5 7.e5Qe8....

Thanks for your help.

Well, Topalov managed to draw with it against Kramnik at Linares '99!

I have and I'll dig through some games to see what happened. I still like Black's position if you play it carefully. The King moves around a little but he can stay safe and I love a material advantage.

I've played it blitz and had pretty good success, but not in correspondence, unless dealing with a very inferior player.

I play Cochrane as white. Vs. different levels and with mixed results:-)
IMO, 5...c5 is the best line for black.

Here's an example of what not to do as black:
Game 103955

10. ...Bxe2??

What was I thinking?

Well I did some research myself and came up with 5...g6 as an alternative to 5...c5. I dont know which is the stronger move.In one of the lines that I looked up the game goes on after 5...g6 and ultimately leads on to the exchange of the Black Queen for a rook and a bishop.Although the exchange is equal I dont like the idea of playing without the Queen. Well If I was a GM, then maybe.

Any other ideas?

Also as black I am scared of my king wandering around so early in the game.

Karpov in his book on the Petroff gives only a little attention to the Cochrane but gives the mainline as 5 ... c5.
If 5 ... g 6 and then 6. Nc3 then 6 ....kg7 or 6 ....Qe8 (not 6 .... Be7). But he doesn't go into much more detail.

I believe that 5...g6 is the main line. I like 5...c5 more because black gets more dynamic play after dxc5 Qa5. If 5...g6 is followed up properly, black should be OK, but it takes patience and good defence skill to not suffocate. Matter of style.

i looked into this a while ago
i think if black is 'wise' to it, it's quite bad for white
but definitely fun
