In my effort to 'fit in' I am considering going to the chess club they have at the college I have just started going to.
But before I do this are there any words of advice you might have about this?

wa! crazy a-levels your taking there!

well, except gov&politcs, that easy.

anyway, seeing as your 1700 here, (and assuming your equally as good OTB) you will probably be stronger than 99% of them (that is, if my college is anything to go by) so, err, go easy on them, and don't point out all their errors during the game -- that just annoy's people.

'wa! crazy a-levels your taking there! ' - how so?

'so, err, go easy on them, and don't point out all their errors during the game -- that just annoy's people.' - I hadn't considered that, thanks. 🙂

r u serious? most college players aren't at a higher level? i'd figure that most of them there would at least be 1600 since they are so old and probably have played for a while. i mean how many people try to get into chess after 20?

Thats exactly what I'm saying, most college players are of low-level....most of them would have just started.

Me, I start taking it seriously the summer after I grad. for high school. Since then I have been studying a lot.

I never played at our univ chess club but I joined a local chess club a couple of years after.

This was the stats back in 2002, should be the same still.

If you are 1800 or higher in OTB you are in the top 15% of chess player in the world. Be proud 🙂

College advice: I only just started my freshman year at university, so what do I know? 🙂

1) Study and study well, keep up with the material. Take as much time as necessary to learn the material, and seek help when you need it.

2) Get involved. (Intramural sports are usually nice, and you don't have to be good at sports to take part. Most universities have clubs and organizations of all sorts.)

3) Limit Your Online Chess/Games/Computer/TV time.

Good luck with the chess club and university. I hope you meet some strong chessplayers and also some nice people there. 🙂

Chess players generally don't "fit in" 😉
