Ok. So I am very confused.

My rating in playchess.com is almost 1700 (all-time high for me) and my yahoo rating is mostly over 1500 and my ICC is the lowest among the three.

So i am not making a comparison to CC, which one should not do. It's a totally different game.

Why is this rating difference in blitz? Where does it come from? Is it because I take playchess.com seriously and not others
?
Or people in ICC are better chess players?

Or what?

Please enlighten me.

mostly it's about different scales. just like BCF grading is very different from FIDE, the same applies to all ratings. another reason is that the populations are not statistically similar, other sites attract more casual players for example, like yahoo. icc gets paying players mostly, and is a little harder to use, so the average user there will be more experienced in chess.

also, if you think how a site starts, the first 2 players coming in with the set starting rating, they can't really get very high until there's other 'high rated' players to win points from. so the age of the population is a factor too, and the growth. then there's different rating formulas too.

you can't tell from ratings if a site has better players, nor is it inflation if one rating system has smaller ratings than the other. just like there's no inflation between BCF and FIDE ratings, they just use different metrics.

what it all comes down to, is that you can't compare the ratings between different sites unless the populations are statistically similar in all of these factors. and that's not going to happen.

Take a look at percentiles. If you're in a significantly higher percentile on playchess than on ICC, then it may be that ICC simply has more difficult opposition, or that you take playchess more seriously (probably the most likely), or some other factor we haven't thought of. However if they are similar, it's probably just a meaningless difference in ratings like wormwood suggested.

Ignore ICC. What's your PlayChess non-provisional/non-padded

- bullet?
- blitz
- standard?

Ignore server ratings. Mine vary by almost 900 points so they are totally meaningless. My Playchess slow rating is actually closest to my real rating.
