here's a position from a finished game of mine in another site. I went on to lose the game. it's calm-looking right?

White to move, try to see if Nxd5 works. I did play it in the game. I will post the solution lines later.

1.Nxd5 Qxd5 2.Nd4 [hoping for 2...Qd7 3.Nxc6 etc. overloading the bQ] 2...Qxg2+! 3.Kxg2 Nxd4+ is scary for White. His King is under serious fire, and Black already has 3 pieces for the Queen.

4.f3?? Ne3+ picks up the Queen.
4.Kh3 Bf3 is really annoying. White has to watch the threat ...Ne6-g5.
4.Kg1 Nf3+ 5.Kh1 [forced, since 5.Kg2?? Ng5+! is game] and further analysis is hardly needed. Black's active minor pieces are obviously superior to the Queen. Black can either simply win some material with 5...Ngxh2, or look around for an even better move.

If White cannot do better than 2.Nd4, then 1.Nxd5 must be a mistake.

wow. that analysis is perfectly accurate, after 4Kg1, ...Bf3 is still even better though (there's no way to move the queen due to 5...Ne2+).

I didn't even consider such queen move during the game, and my false combination worked well and gained me a pawn. then I lost the pawn with a wrong rook move (21...Rad8 would save it instead of the f rook) and eventually the game due to bad endgame play.

Yes, 4.Kg1 Bf3! is game. Good spot.

Combinations like ...Qxg2+ show the importance of watching out for forcing moves, even if they look absurd at first.
