One thing that annoys me no end from the white side of the KG is the line
1. e4 e5 2. f4 Nc6 3. Nf3 exf4 4. Bc4 Be7 5. O-O Nf6, where black attempts to tempt white into the trap 6. e5 Ne4 7. d3 Bc5+ 8. Kh1 Nf2+ winning the exchange.

I'm not sure what the "book" move is on move 6, but I suspect it's something quiet like d3. Yawn. That's no way to get an advantage.

So in a blitz game on FICS, I tried out something new.

Obviously, my opponent completely collapsed here after my little surprise, and ignore the totally unsound play thereafter (I think he actually could have been fine after 13. ... Nxd4, for example), but what do you think of the main issue here, namely, the soundness of 7. Bd5?

After 7.Bd5 Ng5, or 7...Nc5, does white really have more than if he'd played 6.d3?

Hmm... after 7. ... Ng5, I like 8. d4, where white's grabbed more space and a stronger center (and the potential for all sorts of fun tactics) than in the boring 6. d3. For that matter, the same point applies after 7. ... Nc5. after which all of black's pieces seem to land on lousy squares.

Black still has the extra pawn, the chance to get quickly castled, and play ...d6 thinning out white's center, which has lost some mobility by advancing so soon.

There's an even earlier improvement in the line you first give.
1.e4 e5 2.f4 Nc6 3.Nf3 exf4 4.d4 is stronger than 4.Bc4. This might lead to 4...d5 5.e5 Bg4 6.c3 which I think is a big fat plus for White so early on.
