This was a trap I found at chesscafe.com and I made it work in gameGame 584920
After f6,it's better for black to lose the rook or to move the king?all opinions welcome, and thanks to my opponent for letting me post the game.
Originally posted by RavelloIf I remember correctly black must play 3....,Qe7 if he wants to survive.taking the knight on e5 loses,I think.Though it's not so easy as in your game.I must have the complete analyses after 3...,fxe5 written down somewhere,I'll see if I can dig it up and post it if you like.

I remember I used to play this just to bug people, because everyone said it was worthless.I just love the look on their face when you manage to win. Can't do it anymore though, most oppo's would happily smash me
Sir Lot.

Sir Lot.
A couple of months ago I did the wrong move as white and got in serious trouble,i wish to know more deeplyabout this trap.
Thanks sir.
Originally posted by RavelloYes, it is better to give up the rook. White has to be careful not to let the queen trapped, but should easily be able to, and then the position is also won.

But you made a mistake on move 8. that could have been very costly:
8.d3?? Bd6! 9.Qd4 Nf6 and black is even better in my opinion.
The right way to finish the game is
8.h4!, threatening checkmate in a few moves. Black can avoid that with h5 (or h6) but then 9.Bxb7! wins more material because Bxb7? would be followed by Qf5+ and mate in few moves.
Bxb7 would have been the better move also in the game as played instead of 9.Qg3+ that gave not much advantage to white. It is blacks' tenth move (Bd6) that was a mistake followed by the blunder on move 11. offering the mating possibility.
Originally posted by Mephisto2Hmm... I think I'm missing something in your analysis Mephisto. Specifically the "mate in few moves" There's too many lines to list, but it looks like white just wins material, black has enough there to block. Eg. 8. h4 h5 9. Bxb2 Bxb2 10. Qf5+ Kh6 11. d4+ g5 12. Bxg5+ Qxg5 13. Qxg5+ f7 and white only has one piece left in the vicinity of the king with which to continue the attack. (Which would also seem to be why 12. hxg5+ doesn't work -- it would keep the bishop out of the vicinity)

As played, what do you think of 10. f4!? With the threat of f5 and mate one move later. 10. ... Be7 (threatening Bh4) 11. h4 Nf6 12. Bb3 and white seems to have a pretty strong attack. ?

8.h4 h5 9.Bxb7! Bxb7? 10.Qf5+ Kh6 11.d4+ g5 12.Qf7! (and not Bxg5+ as in your line) followed by hxg5+ and Rxh5# because the black queen would be pinned after taking back on g5.
Your suggestion in the game 10.f4 doesn't work I think, because black replies with (for instance and instead of Be7) Bc5 11f5 Ne7! and I don't think white is better.

I'm afraid the lil book I wrote the analyses down in hasn't survived the move,we moved 5 years ago, dunno what happened but it is nowhere to be found. However,I found this on the net,an article with full explaination of the Damiano in acrobat reader format.

I think this is even better than what I had in the lil book 😀
And browsing through my junk,I discovered some hidden treasures, like the games of my first OTb tourney win(that really sounds better if I don't mention it was also the only win ever). But these are of no importance to you,of course. They make me happy though.
of on a trip through memory lane,
Sir Lot.
It's obvious that you only won that game so quickly, because your opponent is a MORON.
Of course you have to give up that rook.
What was he thinking?
Perhaps he just got greedy, didn't want to give up that "free knight" advantage and thought he could worm his way out of trouble.
Or
Perhaps he got curious and wanted to see what would happen if he didn't "fall for it".
Anyways, try playing a better caliber of player and see where it gets you. In fact try it on me sometime.
Good luck,
Tim

Originally posted by paultopiaDon't give me too much credit. I just learned that sequence in old times, like many players must have done. As you can read in SirLosalot's postings, it is not my invention. I admit that Qf7 is a nice and not a very obvious move, a 'quiet' move in-between all the checks that suddenly ends it all.
