I joined a long time ago. At the time it stated that you could play in any USCF rated tournament. When I showed up for one they said I had to also join the state chess organization in order to play. They offered nothing but a little pamphlet showing off their own games. Didn't need it. When I complained all I got was how much it cost them to put on a tournament. Not my problem. I complained to USCF but they did nothing. Not joining again.

That happened to me too.
When I got to a tournament some guy said I had to pay state dues.

Also I joined a correspondence tournament which was classified as a postal tournament but I never got anything in the mail so I assumed it takes time to get a tournament going.
Well I eventually looked at my stats to see my rating after a real tournament and I found out my correspondence rating was really low due to timeouts.
Apparently they said it was ok for the postal tournament to use email and all of my games were timed out and counted as losses.
I paid for a postal tournament.
I did not agree to a server tournament and not an email tournament.

Haven't bought a membership since.
